Data Encryption

Last updated: May 24, 2026

Sendly takes your privacy and data security seriously. Every file uploaded to our service is encrypted before it is stored on our servers, ensuring that your data remains confidential. This document explains how our encryption works, but does not function as a legal document. For legal information, please refer to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

Encryption On-Device

All uploaded files are encrypted on your device. This means that even if our servers are compromised, the file contents remain unreadable. We cannot read or access any files. The only thing that we can read, is the file name, size, and type, so called metadata.

File access across devices

The reason why you can access your files across different devices, is because the decryption key is embedded in the share URL. When you share a file, the URL contains all the necessary information to decrypt the file, allowing recipients to access it without needing a separate key exchange process. Everyone with the share link can access the file, but we do not store these URLs.

File access across your devices (Logged-In Users)

If you are a logged-in user, you can access your files across your devices. We are using an advanced system to keep your files encrypted while allowing you to access them from any approved device. When you log in on a new device, you have to approve this device from another, already approved device. This extra step functions as a 2FA mechanism and exchanges necessary tokens in the background. This way, your files stay encrypted all the time.

File Deletion

When a file expires or is manually deleted, the encrypted blob is securely removed from disk. We do not keep backup copies of expired files. The only thing kept are minimal metadata for auditing and security purposes.
